I recently finished Megan Lally’s newest thriller, and let me tell you, it was an electrifying read! As a longtime fan of suspenseful young adult novels, the description immediately drew me in. The promise of unraveling secrets and the tension that comes with "the incident" had me hooked right from the start. I often enjoy stories where characters navigate their fears while facing the consequences of their past choices, so this book seemed like it would be right up my alley.

In this novel, we follow Brooke, a character who is determined to keep her life seemingly perfect in the wake of a traumatic incident. The narrative builds around her desire to secure a spot at her dream university, compounded by the threat that her past could surface at any moment. The thrilling drive home after a bonfire ends in a chase that had me on the edge of my seat! As secrets unfold, the pacing picks up beautifully, leading to a climax that doesn’t disappoint.

One of the aspects I really appreciated about this book was its ability to keep me guessing. Just like Missouri Mama pointed out in her review, there are plenty of "twists and turns" that keep the story engaging. I found myself completely immersed in Brooke’s struggle and couldn’t put the book down until I turned the last page. It’s a testament to Lally’s writing style that I stayed up late into the night, compelled to see what would happen next.

Another strong point is how relatable Brooke’s character feels. I found her ambitions and fears quite accessible, reminding us all of the pressures that come with being a teenager, especially one who feels the need to maintain a perfect image. Her relationships, especially with her crush, added layers to her character, making her conflict all the more gripping.

However, it wasn’t all flawless. While the middle of the book was exhilarating, I found elements of the pacing uneven, much like Ashley McDonald mentioned in her review. The beginning dragged slightly, and I sensed some rushed elements towards the end. While I appreciated the overall storyline, some transitions felt abrupt, causing minor disruptions in my reading flow. Moreover, I echoed some sentiments where certain characters felt a bit two-dimensional at times. They were indeed rich, privileged teens, but I wished for a bit more depth to understand their motivations better.

Despite these hiccups, I still found much to love about the book. Just like David Bush noted, the shifts between past and present chapters added intrigue and kept pulling me back into Brooke’s world. The storytelling definitely had that cinematic quality, making it easy to visualize every scene unfold like a movie on the screen. The unexpected twist towards the end, as highlighted by Priya, truly caught me by surprise and left a lasting impression!

Overall, I would comfortably rate this book as a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It’s engaging, suspenseful, and provides a satisfying narrative that should appeal to a broad audience, especially fans of thrillers and young adult fiction. If you enjoy stories that leave you guessing till the very last moment and challenge you to reflect on the weight of secrets, I wholeheartedly recommend picking it up. It’s a captivating read that may just haunt your thoughts long after the last page!
