Review of Escape Room
As a lover of thrillers, I was drawn to Escape Room the moment I saw the synopsis—teens held captive in an escape room sounds like the perfect blend of suspense and drama, especially as we near spooky season. I was curious not only about the plot but also how it would capture the eerie tension of feeling trapped.
Escape Room certainly didn’t disappoint. The story follows four friends—Alissa, Sky, Miles, and Mint—on a seemingly fun night out at an escape room. The premise is simple: choose a game, get locked in, find the clues, and escape within 60 minutes. The suspense escalates dramatically when they realize their Game Master has no intention of letting them go. The pacing of the book is relentless, and each twist kept me glued to the pages, eager to see what would happen next.
One of the strong points of the book is its ability to create an atmospheric tension. The author expertly captures the sense of claustrophobia surrounding the escape room scenario, pulling the reader into the characters’ anxiety. A second highlight was the characters themselves; they were well-developed, each with their own fears and backstories that made their plight more relatable. I particularly appreciated the strong friendships among the group, which added depth to their characters and made me invested in their survival.
However, there were a couple of drawbacks that stood out. Firstly, some readers might feel the romance angle took a backseat at times, overshadowed by the more intense thriller elements. For me, that was fine, but I can see how those expecting a more balanced mix of romance and thriller might feel differently. Secondly, the reveal of the Game Master’s motives may come across as somewhat predictable if you frequently read in this genre, though the execution kept it engaging nonetheless.
The book truly shines in its detail about the games and clues. Each puzzle felt unique and clever, which not only kept the excitement high, but also mirrored the urgency of their situation. The official description highlights that the stakes are all too real, and this was conveyed perfectly as I read.
Overall, Escape Room exceeded my expectations as a thrilling read. It keeps you on the edge of your seat with its fast-paced narrative and engaging plot twists. While it may not feature the strongest romantic subplot, the believable friendships and high-stakes scenario more than compensate for that.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys nail-biting thrillers with a hint of horror, especially perfect for a cozy reading session during the fall. If you’re looking for an unputdownable thriller filled with suspense and friendship, Escape Room does not disappoint.
